The Barbados threadsnake, the world's smallest-known snake, has been rediscovered in Barbados after being missing from scientific observation for nearly two decades. Scientists feared the tiny reptile, which can fit on a coin and measures just about four inches long, had gone extinct. The snake was found during a dedicated search in March 2025, overturning hundreds of rocks in its native habitat. Its rediscovery brings relief and excitement to conservationists, as it was previously listed among thousands of species 'lost to science.' The find highlights the importance of ongoing efforts to locate and protect elusive and endangered species.
